PRESS REPORT

OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING – THURSDAY 28th JUNE 2012

Sunshine welcomed our guests from Lach Dennis, Lower Withington and Ollerton as they joined us for our annual “Garden Meeting” in the village hall at Over Peover. It was lovely to hear over 30 voices singing Jerusalem.

The report from the Cheshire Show revealed that we had enjoyed moderate success and that overall it had been a very good show. Correspondence included invitations to other WIs, letters of thanks and details of the CFWI Autumn Meeting and the Weaver Valley Choir performance at Northwich Memorial Hall in October. Members were reminded of imminent social events including the open garden of member Rosalind Jackson, the book club and the August social meeting and meal. Minty Day thanked all those who helped her with the exhibition of Diamond Jubilee Memorabilia at the Over Peover Jubilee Picnic at the cricket club.

Mr Bob McGregor delighted us with his talk: The Magic of Toys. With not a rabbit in sight, he told us of his love of magic tricks and conjuring which he had enjoyed since boyhood at the Boy Magicians’ club in Prestatyn. He shared some strange and wonderful reminiscences and amusing anecdotes about conjuring and being an antique toy collector. We were fascinated by his clever tricks and it was a delight to be shown some of his rare and wonderful old toys and to hear their history. We came away knowing that “Simsalabim” is a much more effective magic word than a simple “Abracadabra”.

The President thanked the catering committee for the refreshments, Connie Welton for the flower arrangement on the President’s table which was given to Helen Skelton, and members for those on the other tables which were given to our guests. At our next meeting the speaker will be Stuart Yarwood who will tell us about “Farming in Challenging Times”.
