PRESS REPORT
OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETINGS
THURSDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER & THURSDAY 30TH OCTOBER 2014
Over Peover WI heard at the meeting at the end of September that the banner to celebrate the centenary of the WI next year is coming along nicely with guidance from Sue Newhouse, the mastermind of the Knutsford Tapestry. £400 was donated to the village hall when the bowls club closed and arrangements and ticket sales for the Fizz fashion show were going well. Members were invited to the Probus Cheese and Wine Party. Ron McLaverty spoke about The Samaritans. Started in 1953, the first phone number was MAN9000. Its use spiralled and the popular press nicknamed them The Good Samaritans – a name which stuck. Sad facts were revealed: 18 people on average end their lives every day and every 5 seconds someone rings Samaritans for help. Their remit is to listen. They don’t make judgements, assumptions, criticise or give advice. Training, funding and the emotional challenges of being a Samaritan were covered in this powerful talk. Sometimes someone calls to thank them for their help – you can’t write a cheque for that! The mood was serious but contemplative as members enjoyed tea and the tantalising cakes provided by Judy Wienholdt and Angela Eccles who also provided the lovely floral decoration.
For those without Angela’s natural talent, Brenda Proudlove gave a classic demonstration of floral arranging at the end of October which was much enjoyed by members. The Boundary Mill shopping trip on 6th November was eagerly anticipated. Flowers and delicious dainties were provided by Kathy Doyle and Marion Walker.
We meet at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at Over Peover Village Hall. There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and speakers are invariably of a very high standard as are the homemade cakes and tea to follow. New members are very welcome.
