Community Speed Watch
Did you know that there is an initiative by Cheshire Constabulary that allows a group of local residents to set up a ‘Community Speed Watch Scheme?’
The scheme would consist of active community members who join together to monitor traffic speed at selected locations within the parish with speed monitoring equipment.
The minimum group size is 6 and volunteers (including a coordinator) would receive training in the use of hand held speed detection equipment allowing members of the scheme to record the registration numbers of speeding motorists.
Speeds can only be monitored on roads with a 40mph limit or less.
The police can then use this information to send out warning notices to drivers advising of the dangers of speeding. Further action can be taken by the police if the problem appears to be persistent.
It is envisaged that each volunteer would contribute around one hour per week and would receive a ‘Hi Vis’ jacket once trained.
The scheme has the added benefit that signs would be erected at the boundaries of the parish advising motorists that they are entering a Community Speed Watch Area hopefully reducing speed generally.
To set up a scheme costs around £230 and funding for this would be sort through the Parish Plan Committee which is looking to set aside this amount should a scheme prove of interest within the community and therefore viable.
If you have concerns regarding speeding in the parish and feel you would like to do something about it please contact me directly and I will put you in touch with the Police Officer dealing with the Community Speed Watch initiative in our area who would be very happy to help set up a scheme in our area.
Many thanks for your interest,
