OVER PEOVER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING
THURSDAY 29th MAY 2014
Preparations for The Cheshire Show on 17th/18th June featured highly in the business of the day. Happily, so did news of improvements to the village hall – mainly windows and roof, and plans were made for Spring cleaning. Members were delighted to hear that Sue Newhouse has agreed to advise us and help to co-ordinate our efforts in making a banner to commemorate the centenary of the WI. It was Sue who skilfully guided, taught and inspired the stitchers of the millennium Knutsford Tapestry which now receives wide acclaim.
After 35 years in banking, John Hooley gives talks about his passion – Steam ships – in this case the ships of the oldest steam ship company in the world – the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. His enthusiasm for his subject brimmed over as he told us about his beloved ships. Many were lost on war service at Dunkirk and as troop ships during WW2. From silver service to false funnels, we were given a thorough insight into the lost world of the steam packet.
Rowena Topham and Christine Clarkson tickled our palates with their homemade delicacies and the flowers were sent to Jean Irlam.
On 5th June a merry little group visited the RHS gardens at Harlow Carr near Harrogate, joined by members of Lower Peover WI and other friends. Lunch in Betty’s famous café and a walk around the gorgeous gardens was rounded off by cream tea back at Betty’s. It was a lovely day out and we did go for the plants – really!
We meet at 7.30pm on the last Thursday of the month at Over Peover Village Hall. There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and speakers are invariably of a very high standard as are the homemade cakes and tea to follow. New members are very welcome.
